The Sacred Mirrors of India: Aranmula kannadi
In Aranmula, the sacred Aranmula Kannadi reflects a 500 year old tradition where craft and mystery intertwine. Unlike ordinary mirrors, its flawless front-surface reflection reveals a rare blend of science, heritage and guarded artistry.
Aranmula kannadi is a sacred mirror made only in the Indian town of Aranmula. Its a 500 years old tradition. The composition remains a closely guarded secret, passed from one generation to the next. It is front-reflecting unlike plane glass mirrors where reflection takes place on the back surface of the glass. In plane mirrors, light travels through the glass and back (where the reflective coating is applied), so it gets refracted and changes direction. Aranmula Kannadi eliminates secondary reflections. Light does not penetrate into any refractive medium like glass. The reflection is on the top metal surface.
In the video above, Sudhammal and her family work 10-hour days handcrafting these distortion-free mirrors, all to carry on a family legacy.
