Wisdom in Difficult Times: Pema Chödrön

“The only time we really know what’s really going on is when the rug’s been pulled out from underneath us and we can’t find anywhere to land.

Things falling apart is a kind of testing and also a kind of healing. We think that the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It’s just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We never know if we’re going to fall flat or sit up tall. When there’s a big disappointment, we don’t know if that’s the end of the story or the beginning of a great adventure.”

Pema Chödrön is an American Tibetan Buddhist nun and bestselling author known for her teachings on compassion, resilience, and embracing uncertainty. Through works like When Things Fall Apart, she offers simple, profound guidance on navigating life’s challenges with awareness and inner strength. She is one of the first Western women to be fully ordained in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

Pema Chödrön reminds us that life’s uncertainties are not obstacles to escape but spaces to grow within. She reframes falling apart as both a test and a healing, where every emotion has its place. In her wisdom, even disappointment holds the quiet possibility of a new beginning.
