The Tree That Gives Water: Terminalia Tomentosa

Terminalia Tomentosa also known as Indian Laurel, Asan, Mathi, or Punnai maram stores drinkable water inside its inner bark.

When the natural water bodies dry up in the scorching summer heat in the western ghats, the Terminalia Tomentosa trees are nature’s water reserve. 5-6 litres of water can be collected by making a V-shaped cut in the tip of the lateral ridge. The water found inside the tree, reaches up to 25-30 feet from the ground, tastes saline but scientifically proven to be potable with medicinal properties. The local jungle inhabitants and tribals have for centuries held it a closely guarded secret. They are identified by their cracked barks and known as crocodile bark tree. Remember to seal the hole when done so that the tree can heal fast.
